Washington, March 21, 1842.
In the Senate, Mr. Huntington made a long argument in favor of an increased Tariff, after which they went into Executive Session. I understand they rejected the nomination of Mr. Stewart, from an adjacent county in Maryland, in the place of Dr. Barker. One of the Senators told me he voted against him with great reluctance and regret. He said they had already rejected one nominee for that place; they believed Mr. Stewart an honest man, but they had such evidence before them as convinced them he was incompetent to the duties of so important a station. I know nothing of this Mr. Stewart, except that he was associated with Mr. Poindexter on the committee for investigating the New York Custom House. Old Poins certainly has not a very exalted opinion of his capacity. I am told he was strongly recommended to the President by Mr. W. C. Johnson and others. It is thought now that the place will be given to F. O. J. Smith.
P. S.-Mr. H. E. Lawrence, who was sent to Mexico by Bailie Peyton, as a Special Agent to our Minister there, has just arrived. He says Santa Anna positively refuses to deliver up Kendall or any other of the American prisoners. Mr. Lawrence is only 20 days from the city of Mexico.
