TO THE EDITOR OF THE AURORA.
SIR—An incident occurred in my presence this morning, which strongly marks the character of parties in our country. In a promiscuous company, collected without design, the late brilliant and highly important victory on lake Erie was of course mentioned; various opinions were expressed as to the result likely to follow, but no one ventured to speak of the act itself with regret, until a person, who is a sort of half-quaker, a member of the Washington Benevolent Society, and a distinguished disturber of the peace at a late meeting at Hill's, near Broad street, without hesitation said he was sorry that Perry was successful on one account; on being asked what that reason was, he replied, because it will help the democrats at the election. I do not know whether the countenances of the by-standers betrayed more of contempt than pity: at all events so base a declaration could not but have excited some indignation, but it was checked very fortunately for the Cossack. Thus you see, sir, that the cause of the British will be the cause of the federalists on the day of election, and thus it is admitted that the glorious success of our country against an implacable enemy will injure federalism at this election! Why injure it? is the question—because the heart of our honest people will rejoice, and because, whilst they rejoice at our triumph over the British, they will not fail to exert themselves to triumph over their friends in the United States.
