OUTRAGE AND VIOLENCE.—It is with feelings of great pain that we are called upon to record an outrage committed at a political meeting in this city, where heretofore, it has been our pride and boast that the canvass had invariably been conducted with order, peace and tranquility. On Saturday night, the Whigs held a meeting at the shed of the Pontchartrain railroad, in the Third Municipality. Whilst the speaking was going on, a large number of the opposite party came down among them, and, it is said, attempted to pass into the interior. They were remonstrated with, but expostulation seemed unavailing. Persisting in the endeavor to force a passage, the Whigs resisted, and though, we believe, at that time no blows were struck, one of the banners belonging to the Loco-Focos were torn to shreds. The Polk and Dallas party then retired, order was restored, and the proceedings of the meeting were resumed.

It appeared, however, that the Loco-Focos had only withdrawn to rally and entrench themselves in a position whence the Whigs might be assailed without danger; for they betook themselves to the Levee, among a heap of paving stones, and, concealed by the darkness, poured volley after volley of these missiles among the Whigs beneath the Railroad shed, which, being brilliantly lighted, enabled their assailants almost to pick out their men.

The Whigs, being totally unprepared for this attack, were, of course, taken by surprise and unable to defend themselves. Many were struck down, and several received severe wounds. Among those who were cut and bruised are Alphonso Canonge, Esq., Henry Ogden, Esq., Mr. Roberts, Mr. Simmons, &c. No lives were lost.

After bearing the brunt of the unequal contest as long as possible, the Whigs generally dispersed.
