State Politics.
Mr. Proctor's Way.
We do not care to make such a serious matter of it as does the Burlington Free Press. We believe that Clement is beaten anyway, at the primaries; and if he cares so little for party allegiance as to tempt fate with another independent campaign, why all the more deeply, will he be buried when the people of Vermont finally pronounce his political doom. Meanwhile what a contrast in the quiet, dignified attitude of Fletcher D. Proctor, secure in the support of his friends, unshaken in his devotion to party and principle, and merely watching with a tolerant smile, the fantastic campaign of his more theatrical rival. When it comes to a final show-down, which man will Vermonters choose-the sensational inventor of political surprises, whose policy is, "anyway to win;" or the steady, patriotic Vermonter whose gains in the public confidence are now a matter of daily growth? The answer seems to be self-evident.-[Vergennes Enterprise and Vermonter.
