The spirit of some of the 'Native' papers being quite harmless, is really amusing They won't tolerate any thing whatever from abroad. They are disposed not only to keep foreigners from having a voice in our government but they will not allow them to tickle their long (Native) ears, with those delightful sounds, which entrance the rest of the world. Ole Bull, is no fiddler and a humbug, because he came from Norway: DeMeyer can't possibly play on the piano for he came from abroad. also. Mrs. Hemans was nothing as a poetess, for she resided in England; and as for Shakspeare, who also lived there, he was as good as could be expected under the circumstances. but he can't hold a candle to Bryant. If the Natives had a grain of common sense in their views, such ridiculous assumptions would spoil it. They know that these men have a genius in their line, which entrances the world; and it ought to teach them that the same soil which gives birth to genius of that kind, just as readily gives birth to the genius which can comprehend and administer free institutions.
