A singular Expedition.—Left this town on 21st ult. for the Russian settlement on the Pacific Ocean, Israel Mitchell, a citizen of this place, in company with two other young men, Stephen Howard and Martin Smith. The party intend visiting the northern posts of the United States, and passing the coming winter at the Scotch settlement near Green Bay. The Spring following they mean to set out for the Pacific Ocean, calculating to follow the Northern boundary line of the United States to where it strikes the Pacific. Their object is purely to acquire topographical information. The occupation of the mouth of the Columbia River, by the United States, has been for some years a desideratum with Mr. Mitchell; and, as our last Congress seems to have abandoned that object, he, unaided by the general government, and without even individual assistance, has attempted to explore that inhospitable region.
