Henry Peery Sends Detective After a
Delinquent.
A deal in mining stocks yesterday afternoon
came near resulting in the arrest
of A. B. Carstensen, the bookkeeper at E.
N. Jenkins' Temple of Music store, on a
charge of obtaining money under false
pretenses. Carstensen, it is said, offered
to sell 500 shares of Leora to D. H. Peery,
the broker, for $250, but Peery declares
that when the time came for the delivery
of the stock, which had in the meantime
advanced, Carstensen refused to give it
up or to give back the money.
According to the story, as told by Mr.
Peery, he sent his clerk to buy the stock
at 50 cents. Carstensen, he says, offered
to sell it and was given $250 by Mr. Pick-
ring, Mr. Peery's clerk, with the under-
standing that he would deliver the stock,
which belonged to his employer, E. N.
Jenkins, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon.
When the time came Mr. Peery sent his
clerk for the stock, but he returned and
said that Carstensen refused to give up
the stock and would not refund the mon-
ey. The broker immediately sent for De-
tective Sheets who, with the clerk, went
to see Carstensen. The detective said that
Carstensen at first declared that he had
paid the money back to the young man.
The young man denied it and the detec-
tive told the bookkeeper that unless he
gave back the money or turned over the
stock he would arrest him. Carstensen
told the officer that he could arrest him
if he wanted to, but when the detective
started to do it, Carstensen, it is said,
pulled out the money from his pockets
and paid it to Pickering. Accordingly, no
further action was taken in the matter
by the officer.
Carstensen would not give any explana-
tion of his conduct to the officers.
