"I'a shaw the very age and body of the times."
The tobacco crops of both Maryland and Ohio are now gathered and housed, and some pains have been taken to ascertain the quantities raised in each State. The high rates of breadstuffs last year, and the very low prices of tobacco, owing both to the general inferior quality and the large quantity produced, induced the planters of Maryland to raise less tobacco than usual the present season, and it is now pretty well ascertained that the produce this year will not exceed half an average crop, but the proportion of good quality will be much larger than last year, and will probably be larger than in ordinary years, because the planters, having less to manage, have more room in their drying houses, and can give more care. In Ohio, the quantity raised this season is supposed to be not over 6,000 to 8,000 hogsheads, against 29,000 hogsheads last year. It is to be remarked, however, that a good deal of last year's crop will be kept at home on account of the break in the Pennsylvania canal, and will be sent to market in the coming summer with the new crop.
