PORTSMOUTH.

Extract of a Letter dated London, October 17, 1765.

I congratulate my American Friends on their steady and firm Attachment to the Rights and Privileges of British Subjects, and though G--v-lle's unaccountable Ignorance of true Policy, has procured him his desired Taxation; you may depend upon it, neither the Man nor his Measures are approved of, and the new Ministry already perceive, that the Act. was too suddenly passed, and that America is not ripe for such Burthens : If you should withhold your Orders for future Importations of our Manufactures it would set us at our Wits End, Money being now scarce with us, and our Factors and Correspondents abroad failing in Remittances,--our Tradesmen soliciting Payments, for want of which they daily discharge their Workmen, who again for want of Bread, are become a serious Consideration for the sensible Part of this great City-- These Things alone, will work as much or rather more in your Favour than your Opposition--the Parliament don't Sit for Dispatch of Business till the 17th of December, between this and then we hope to hear further from you, and on our part we shall stand by you with our Interest.
