CHARLESTON, June 16, 4 P. M. -Another severe battle was fought this morning on James Island, four miles from the city.

The enemy advanced with five regiments to assault our Secessionville battery with the bayonet. Col. T. G. Lamar commanded the battery, his force consisting of only a few hundred of our troops. He waited the approach of the Yankees, reserving his fire until they had got within close range: when he opened upon them with grape and musketry, literally mowing down the advancing Yankee column. The enemy reeled, faltered and fled, but presently, having been reinforced by artillery, they again formed and again charged, but were again repulsed with great slaughter.

A third time they advanced, endeavoring to flank our battery, but again they were beaten back. Then our forces advanced from their works in pursuit, killing and capturing many of the enemy.

Our victory is complete.

Our loss is twelve killed and twenty wounded. Our Charleston troops were chiefly engaged.

The enemy's loss is unascertained yet, but certainly numbers several hundred in killed, wounded and prisoners.

A batch of thirty prisoners have just been brought to the city.
