Full Text
Since my announcement as a candidate to represent this district in the next Congress of the United States, I have been actively engaged in the canvass and whilst I am fully satisfied that the States Rights party have the power to elect in this contest, I am equally convinced that there is not now time so to embody that party, as to draw out its entire strength. My competitors, as is well known, had more than a month the start of me in the canvass, and many States Rights gentlemen feel themselves committed either to one, or the other of them. In this state of things, my vote must necessarily fall below the strength of my party. I cannot, therefore, consent to occupy a position, which could but result in injury to the glorious cause which I have espoused
To the gallant spirits who selected me as their standard bearer, I tender my warmest gratitude; and in retiring from this contest, as I now do, I beg leave to assure them, that whenever the flag which floats from that standard, shall be again thrown to the breeze, I will be found rallying to its support.
