Full Text

Whipping His Wife And Breaking Up His Dishes.
Phillip Disher, a German, lives on the Island and follows the lawful occupation of fixing old umbrellas. He is not a violent man, but the other day he bought one of his children a pair of shoes and went off to spend an hour or so in watching the practice of Buell's artillery, now stationed near his house. In front of Disher's residence there is a pond and during his absence the wife of his bosom permitted the child to approach the pond and throw one of its new shoes into the same. Disher fished for the shoe and not being successful became very much enraged, and proceeding to the house fell upon and beat the wife aforesaid. This occupation seemed rather to increase than diminish his anger and after whipping his wife he proceeded to break up all the dishes and crockery in the house. He was taken before Ald. Duffy and fined five dollars and costs.
