TWENTIETH CONGRESS.
SECOND SESSION.
[Abstracted for the American and Microcosm.]
Monday Feb. 16—In the SENATE Mr. Knight's credentials of his election as a Senator from Rhode Island for six years from the 4th of March were presented.
The bill for the relief of the New England Mississippi Land Company was called up, and the yeas and nays on its passage stood 19 to 19. The Vice President voted in the negative, and the bill was rejected. Mr. Ruggles, (one of the nays) gave notice for a reconsideration of the vote. 17 private bills were passed to second reading.
Mr Southard's reply to the call of the Senate for the authority on which he had proceeded in fitting out the Polar Expedition, was received, and ordered to be printed. The President, in communicating it, states that no transfers have been made from the different heads of appropriation for the Navy, or this object as is implied by the resolution of the Senate.
In the HOUSE about 90 petitions were presented.
Mr Everett made a report on the petitions of George Taylor and Edward Dexter, relating to French spoliations prior to 1800.
The Cumberland Road Bill was further discussed, in the House. Mr Ramsay's amendment to double the number of toll gates, was rejected. Mr Mitchell of S. Carolina, opposed the whole Bill on constitutional grounds.
Mr Burner replied, and vindicated the character of Alexander Hamilton whom Mr M. had stigmatized as a monarchist. (the living cuckoo pecking at the dead eagle.)
Mr Sergeant supported the bill and opposed Mr Buchanan's amendment to cede the road to the States in which it lies. Before he had concluded the House adjourned.
