DRY JAPAN IN
NEXT 15 YEARS
SHANGHAI—"Pussyfoot" Johnson, famous American dry advocate, arrived today in Shanghai, the world's wettest port, practically unheralded. He called immediately on American Consul General Edwin Cunningham, where he paid his respects. Later he visited the foreign Y. M. C. A., and conferred with a few foreigners interested in the prohibition movement.
Mr. Johnson, who recently surveyed the situation in the Far East, said he believes Japan is heading for prohibition within 15 years. With reference to China, he said the political situation still is too chaotic for the Nationalist leaders to pay serious attention to the prohibition movement, but he is convinced that China cannot escape the world anti-alcohol movement.
From Shanghai Mr. Johnson is heading for Manila, where he will assist in the organization of the World League Against Alcohol. He said the Philippine islands must join the movement, which now embraces 36 nations. From Manila he is going to India, and then to Europe.
A local newspaper publishes an interview with Mr. Johnson, which is inserted in the center of a sea of advertisements for cafes, hotels, cabarets and bars, all promising their patrons unbounded quantities of Christmas cheer and urging everybody to stock up before the prices increase.
