The Spirit of the Times,
Displays itself from all quarters—from the sacred desk, from the bar, from all social circles, and from individuals, we hear but one sentiment. The insolence of the French Directory to our Envoys, is every where execrated. And the determination to resist their aggressions is unanimous and decided. After reading the substance of their demands, contained in this day's Gazette, cold indeed must be the blood of that American, Who is not fired with indignation.
The State of New York is soliciting the means of defence.
A person suspected of being concerned in a French privateer, has been tarred and feathered at Savannah. Spirit of '75.
A pious clergyman of Philadelphia, on the sabbath after the President had communicated his message to Congress, delivered an occasional discourse from the following pertinent text:
If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people; then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet and taketh not warning; if the sword shall come and take him away his blood shall be upon his own head.
