The Morning Chronicle establishment pays over £53,000 pounds sterling to the Government for stamp and excise duties. The Times pays a still larger amount, £68,137, more than $300,000! There are nearly 10,000 copies of this journal circulated daily!
Every advertisement, whether of two lines or twenty, pays to the Government, over 75 cents, and every ream of paper used $2 23. Each paper is separately stamped before printing, and each stamp costs 4d sterling, or about 7 cents.
The subscription to a London paper, without any privilege of advertising, is 9 pounds, or 40 dollars, per annum.
