Full Text

Charleston, Oct 16.

The U. S. schr. Porpoise, is now fitting out rapidly in this port, and we understand her commander, James Ramage, Esq. has been appointed by the government to the charge of the survey of the coasts of Florida, from St. Mary's round by the Dry Tortugas to Mobile Bay. The Revenue Cutter at Savannah, and other small vessels, as well as several fine boats now building here, are attached to the Porpoise.

In this great national work, (certainly the most important and scientific of the kind, yet undertaken by our country,) captain Ramage will be joined by a number of naval officers, as well as the topographical engineers; and from their united talents, we may expect the most important information relative to a portion of our territory hitherto but little known.

The early attention of our government to this subject, merits the applause of every citizen of the republic.
