Two hundred and fourteen persons attending the Scouters' Banquet, John Hope Division, Boy Scouts of America made a successful ending for a year of Scouting at the new YWCA. The Scouters and their friends were welcomed by Mr. W. A. Quillian, one of the oldest registered Scouters in Atlanta. The program appropriate for the occasion was highlighted by the featured speakers. Mr. John Wesley Dobbs' address. Mr. Dobbs, using the theme "Worthwhile Acts," gave an inspiring talk extolling the virtues of doing things worthwhile. He cited Scouting as a most worthwhile endeavor and related several incidents to support his arguments. He challenged all those present to continue the good work and enlist others to follow in this worthwhile activity of building the youth into good men and good citizens. Mr. Dobbs' dissertation will long be remembered by all those in attendance.
Among those presented awards, Dr. Laurence E. Boyd was the recipient of Scouting's coveted award for outstanding work in Scouting, the "Silver Beaver." Dr. Boyd, a long time member of Scouting, has been connected with Scouting activity for the past twenty one years. He began this worthwhile activity in Virginia in 1929 and continued this great work in North Carolina, where he served as Scoutmaster and organized the first troop and aided in its training in the Cherokee Council in North Carolina. He was elevated to the Chairman of the leadership training in Old Hickory Council, North Carolina. His work in the Atlanta council has been tremendous. He has been the Divisional Commissioner since 1946. He has also served on many and various committees, having to do with Scouting. His work is not limited to Scouting activities. He participates in other civic and religious affairs. He organized and conducts the campus church services at Morris Brown College for out of town students, regardless of their home church affiliation. He is a member of the budget committee of the YMCA, a Mason, an Elk, a member of the Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, Exchange professor of Psychology and Education at Atlanta University, is known as the "Ambassador of Good Will" to his associates at Morris Brown College and is the "Good Shepherd" to his Scouting associates. His work beyond the call of duty is cherished and will be ever remembered by all who know him. We in Scouting are grateful for his outstanding leadership. He was presented this award by a man, himself a proud wearer of the "Silver Beaver," Mr. L. F. Gordan. Mr. Gordan's presentation was magnificent.
Dr. M. D. Kennedy, Chairman of the John Hope Division, received a plaque for outstanding service from Lincoln Country Club's President Toomer. Among the other recipients of awards, Mr. A. W. Parks received the fifteen year service pin for his outstanding work in Scouting. Mr. Edward Cleveland received the outstanding Scoutmasters' award of the year, presented by Mr. J. P. Jones. Troop 243, Flipper Temple AME Church, took the camping and advancement award. Troop 206 at Roswell, Georgia received the attendance award for the third time. Other awards were presented to the Den Mothers and Cubmaster Milton White received the outstanding cub master award of the year.
Scouts from Troop 89 gave the banquet a most Scouting air by erecting a camping scene on the stage of the auditorium. Those Scouts participating were Warren Bush, Joe Tucker, Robert Lowrie and Frank Lowrie.
The invocation was given by Rev. W. Smith and Mr. C. A. Ingram, Field Scout Executive for the John Hope Division, gave the closing remarks. The affair was dismissed by Eagle Scout John Simmons' recitation of the Scout Oath and singing "Auld Lang Syne."
The banquet committee wishes to express their gratitude for the success of the occasion to all those participating and to the Scouters and their friends.
