"Nathan German to the bar," called Assistant Prosecutor Andrew Van Blarcom in Judge Martin's courtroom the other day, as he was arraigning a number of prisoners to take their pleas.

"Nathan German," repeated the court officer, as a man ascended the raised platform on which the prisoners stand to plead or be sentenced.

"Are you Nathan German?" asked Van Blarcom in surprise as he looked up at the man who was about to plead.

"I just is boss," replied the man, who was as black a son of Africa as was ever seen in the Court House.

"I have seen negroes with Irish names and with red hair," remarked Van Blarcom, as he recorded a not guilty plea for Nathan German, "but I'll be hanged if I ever ran across one with a name that touched that one before."
