DATES FIXED
H. C. Warden Chosen Vice-President Of Virginia Horse Show Association
Dates for the twenty-ninth annual exhibition of the Clarke County Horse and Colt Show Association, to be held at the Berryville Show grounds as usual, this summer, will be Thursday and Friday, August 21 and 22, as fixed by the Virginia Horse Show Association at a recent meeting held in Alexandria. Mr. Geo. H. Levi represented Clarke at the meeting as alternate for Mr. H. C. Warden, who was selected as delegate at the annual election of officers here on the second Saturday in January.
Mr. Levi reports that increased interest was shown at the meeting this year and that more representatives were present than usual. The Virginia Breeders' Association also sent representatives there and the association agreed to furnish premiums for a yearling class at all shows in the Virginia circuit.
Two jockeys, charged with unfair racing, were barred from any show in the circuit as it is the aim of the association to have ever better shows.
Last summer the local show was held on August 15 and 16, and so pronounced was its success that state-wide interest has been manifested and it has come to be known as one of the leading members of the Virginia circuit. The twenty-eighth exhibition knocked the props from the old troublesome deficit that tended to discourage the willing workers of the association and a $5200 deficit of only a few years ago has been reduced to $600. Encouraged by the success of last summer's show, the promoters are looking forward with greater vim to the coming events and that these will be ever better and bigger shows for Berryville is a foregone conclusion.
Officials of the local association include men of high standing in the community, whose devotion to clean sport has never been questioned. At the annual gathering of the stockholders, Mr. R. Powell Page was again elected to the position of chief executive, with Messrs. J. T. Lindsey as vice-president, and J. H. Bell, manager, while Mr. A. B. Hummer combines the duties of secretary and treasurer. The directorate includes: Messrs. J. T. Lindsey, Frank V. Tilford, H.C. Warden, E. A. Lindsey, Geo. H. Burwell, Kenneth N. Gilpin, J. H. Bell, Geo. H. Levi, W. L. Bowles, Capt. Ewart Johnston and Dr. L. M. Allen.
At the meeting of the Virginia Association in Alexandria, Messrs. Manly W. Carter, of Orange, was re-elected president; Harry C. Warden, of Berryville, vice-president, and F. D. Gaskins, of Warrenton, secretary-treasurer.
Those present at the meeting were: Messrs. F. W. Carter, H. C. Warden, F. D. Gaskins, S. C. Reynolds, R. H. Norton, E. D. Cottrell, J. L. Euke, S. W. Wysong, G. H. Levi, P. W. Anderson, D. B. Smith, J. H. Dillon, and from the executive committee of the Virginia Horse Breeders Association, Messrs. H. M. Luttrell, J. W. Carter and D. C. Sands.
