According to President Thomas d'Arcy Brophy Birmingham Officials insisted on arrangements which are clearly in violation of the policy of the foundation that no segregation of any individuals or groups of any kind on the basis of race or religion be allowed on the Freedom Train. "We reaffirm our determination that the American Heritage program shall be an instrumentality for strengthening the freedom and liberties of all Americans, regardless of race, color or creed."
Separate lines for the two races were proposed by the City Commission, with 25 persons taken alternately from each line The foundation ruled:"A single line leading to the Freedom Train must be open to all and must extend the length of the train and through the exhibition area."
Other visits by the train have been canceled at Memphis, and other points.
