FIGHT IN LIQUOR SALOON.

Chicago, Ill., April 11.-In a desperate battle, early today, between a saloonkeeper and eight drunken marauders armed with revolvers, two men were shot and two others were badly wounded with a bottle.

"The affair occurred in Michael Adonowicz's saloon, on the South Side. Two of the men covered Adonowicz with their pistols, while another pair started to open the cash register. Other members of the gang helped themselves to whisky and cigars.

Adonowicz, undaunted by the pistols levelled at him, seized a heavy bottle and assailed his captors with a vigor so sudden that both were stretched in a trice. Then Adonowicz snatched a revolver from a third member and opened fire. Michael Benzley, one of the intruders, fell with bullets in hip and abdomen. The fire was returned by Benzley's companions.

In the fight chairs were hurled through the windows. and the bar was wrenched from its fastenings. Adonowicz was struck on the head and knocked senseless, Charles Ashmus. living over the saloon, attracted by the noise, rushed into the street just in time to meet two of the highwaymen, who were leaving the place. One of the men promptly shot at him. The bullet inflicted a scalp wound. The men took $7 from him and departed.

When the police arrived the men, with the exception of Benzley, who was unconscious, had fled. Later Herman Podehl and Joseph Polaczynski, supposed to have been concerned in the affair, were arrested, Both men were badly cut and bruised. Adonowicz and Ashmus were also unconscious, but were easily revived. The saloon is a complete wreck.
