On CONVERSATION.
SOCIAL Converse is a Pleasure
Much esteem'd by Men of Parts,
It unlocks all Wisdom's Treasure,
And improves the noblest Hearts.
Through the pleasing Maze of Life,
Each communicates his Mind,
Now indulging sprightly Wit,
Now to graver Themes confin'd:
Slander, Envy, proud Conceit
And affectation are its Foes:
Souls ennobled are too great
To be susceptible of those.
But Candour, Honesty and Truth,
And Friendship free from all Disguise,
(The Ornaments of Age and Youth)
Possess the Bosom of the Wise.
With all these blooming Virtues crown'd;
And Learning's fairest Daughter Sense,
They Joy diffuse and spread around,
And charm the Heart with Eloquence,
May Heav'n indulgent to me give,
To spend with such each cheerful Hour,
Then happy, happy shall I live
Regardless of blind Fortune's Pow'r. H.
