Full Text
How long will those persons who have hitherto borne the title of democrats—and some of whom we believe to be of good judgment and accurate discrimination—how long, we say, can such men bear the falsehood and absurdities by which the party is held together? We believe that patience has done her perfect work, and that they must have those eyes opened which have so long been sealed up with democracy—the clay of Frenchified liberty, and the shuttle of an ALLIANCE WITH FRANCE, and a war with England, must certainly unclose them.
The alarming condition of our country is sufficient to make any reasonable man deprecate the conduct of those who have been the cause of it. But when we see the Chief Magistrate of the Union stooping from his pride of place for the paltry purpose of influencing a state election we cannot restrain our indignation. These sentiments must arise by the perusal of a letter from James Madison to Gen. Stark, and which was evidently intended as a spur to set that superannuated old horse a kicking. We feel no ingratitude towards Gen. Stark for the services which he did perform, during the revolution; but we condemn his conduct in suffering himself to be led away thus, to use these services as a handle to effect the ambitious views of some unprincipled demagogues.
