St. John's Episcopal School, preparing for its fifth year of operation and about to move into a new school building at Orange Grove, will in the future be known as 'St. Dunstan's Episcopal School.' This was confirmed at a meeting of Bishop Swift's Board of Advice last Monday. The report of Dr. Richard Bond's Committee on Names was accepted unanimously.
Although the School became a Diocesan institution under the Bishop of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands some time ago, it was thought appropriate to leave the name unchanged while it was occupying quarters of St. John's Parish.
In the search for a new name, the Committee was guided by considerations of distinctiveness, simplicity, appropriateness, and especially a symbolic relation between the name of the school and its avowed objective of good Christian education. St. Dunstan lived in England in the tenth century and was considered a great scholar and statesman who worked for the unity and religious betterment of his country. He lead several schools to positions of prominence in Europe and served for 28 years as Archbishop of Canterbury.
