Obstacle Gym to Keep Men Fit

To insure that every soldier at Keesler Field is physically fit for combat duty and to meet any emergency encountered in Army service, a rigorous physical program has been developed. A staff of 12 highly experienced civilian athletic directors and trainers handles the entire program at Keesler with J. Frank Grimm as the Director of Physical Training.

Plans for the training here were started a year ago and took concrete form with Grimm's arrival. Today the conditioning program is based on physiological development. Every exercise used is selected from that standpoint; even the order in which the exercises are given.

"It is not a hit and miss proposition as many might conclude. It is physiologically sound," Grimm stated.

The physical training program will be materially changed in the future with the advent of obstacle courses on the Post. Soldiers will be given the types of exercise that are fundamental to a soldier's routine. The course will develop the soldier's endurance, agility, confidence and self-reliance.

The obstacle gym being developed for the AM students will be installed in Block 37. It will be 18 feet high, 32 feet long and seven feet wide. The obstacles are patterned after a regulation gymnasium equipped with horizontal ladders, climbing rope and parallel bars. Other obstacle courses will be added as conditions warrant.

11 ON STAFF
There are primarily two physical education programs at Keesler. The first program attempts to develop a high standard of physical efficiency while the soldiers are in Replacement Training. In the second phase, exercises are given to retain the efficiency previously developed.

The 11 men on the physical education staff under Grimm are college graduates and trained coaches. They include George H. Adams, Delbert C. Disler, George H. Johnson, Emmett R. Joyce, Werner J. Luchsinger, Joseph W. Mixie, Frank S. and Martin O'Connor, brothers, Raymond Plato, John D. Raudabaugh and Dean Wadley.
