"Physically, geologically and subserviently to man's employment, the Imperial Valley stands unique."
Wilbur O. Emerson, Valley resident in 1904, in those words sounds the keynote of an optimistic article appearing in the December issue of "Country Gentleman," nationally known publication, dealing with the past, present and future of what Emerson calls an area that "is doing the impossible . . . lifting itself by its bootstraps."
The magazine, which appeared on the news stands Wednesday, will carry the story of Imperial Valley to every corner of the nation.
Emerson sums up his article in these words:
"Provided Imperial successfully evades entanglements with certain interests now seeking its electrical-power distribution, the monetary value of that auxiliary can be added to the above items of savings (made possible by the All American canal.) Figures show this subsidiary alone capable of liquidating the entire cost of Imperial's huge undertakings. Many greedy eyes are resting on this golden plum at the moment. Irrespective of this angle's outcome, Imperial, comparable with the present, can't lose."
The article, entitled "Imperial Digs Out," is a glowing account of man's reclamation of the desert, citing tremendous per acre harvests, rich soil and freedom under Boulder Dam and the All American canal from dangers of flood and drought.
It is a recital of the section's early history in comparison with the present and as an indication of the future.
The author was himself an Imperial Valley pioneer, associated with his father in early day promotion of real estate sales in the townsite of Imperial and later of Brawley and Calexico.
