AUTUMN EVENING.
'Tis Autumn's sunset. Come—behold
The grandeur of our forest scene!
How like a sea of molten gold,
The western sky unfurls its sheen!
And trace the shining earth's deep hue,
How gloriously blest it seems :
The rising hills in lustrous blue.
The brightness of our valley's streams
Come hither, to this holy spot,
And seat thee on this lofty knoll ;
And if Religion's sacred thought
Thy bounding bosom e'er hath known,
Come! thy rapt vision here shall see.
A heavenly beauty. Oh, look
How fair the tinge on land and tree,
How sweet the murm'ring of the brook!
The mountain's top hath caught the light.
And now 'tis fading fast away;
Yea soaring bird speeds on with might,
To greet the dying sunset ray.
Sail on! sail on, bright happy one
Thou mov'st on pinions light and free :
Ah! would that Man might face the Sun
With quick and careless heart as thee!
My heart, my brain is full, and yet
I may not trace these beauties how—
For wild romance hath strongly set,
Its hand on vale and mountain's brow.
But pouring on such mystic rays,
Where'er I turn my ravished gaze,
My heart gives upwards to the skies,
Creation's mighty God to praise
