STATE MAXIMS.
It is less dangerous for Rulers to mind too much what the people say, than too little.
The laws are the only guards which we can be sure will never run away from us.
The profits of places should be measured as they conduce more or less to the public good.
Where the least useful part of the people have the most credit, we may conclude, that the way to get every thing, is to be good for nothing.
An extravagant salary to one man, raiseth the market of every body else.
He who thinks his place below him, will certainly be, below his place.
Men who only carried mortar to the building, when it is finished. think. they are ill dealt with, if they are not made master workmen.
Some men knock loud, only to be let in, the bustle they make is animated by private interest.
A weak man is easily blown out of his small senses by being mustered into a party.
A man in a party is able to make a noise, let it be ever so empty a sound.
Nothing is more in fashion than for men to desire good places, and nothing is less so, than to deserve them.
