Full Text
As we surmised last week, the French commanders have uncovered the approaches to Paris, leaving the army of Gen. Trochu, within the walls, to protect that city, and have taken up positions at or near Metz, and along the Belgian frontier convenient to the Prussian line of communication. Bazaine has a position in or somewhere near Metz; while McMahon is "standing out," at striking distance, to the northwest, between Metz and Mezieres. The Prussian armies appear to have changed from the advance on Paris, and are marching by the right flank to meet the French in their new positions, as they were compelled to do, or otherwise have their communications cut and their line of retreat blockaded.
A great battle is hourly expected, and, in fact, must be fought, unless one side or the other declines to fight. The present situation is one that will terminate in a great battle, or, a retreat which will inevitably prove disastrous to the army retreating. Peace will probably follow either event.
