Full Text

The declaration ascribed to Mr. Calhoun, that "he would still go for General Jackson," is contradicted, and doubtless upon the best grounds. If the statement was true, it would warrant a repetition of the anecdote which Mr. de la Borde lately quoted in the French Chamber of Deputies. Louis XI. received a deputation from the Genoese, who said to him "We give ourselves to you;" and "I," answered the king, "give you to the Devil." General Jackson's "Understanding you now, Sir," is almost equivalent to Sir Giles Overreach's reply to Lovel in the "New Way to pay Old Debts"

The declaration ascribed to Mr. Calhoun that he would still go for General Jackson is contradicted upon the best grounds. If true, it would echo an anecdote quoted by Mr. de la Borde in the French Chamber of Deputies about Louis XI. rejecting Genoese deputation, and General Jackson's response likened to Sir Giles Overreach's reply in the play.
