The attention of our citizens, and particularly the members of our police jury, is cited to the call of Gov. McEnery for a convention of farmers and planters on the 26th of January, 1887, which will be found below. In view of the great straits to which the planting interests in this parish are reduced, and the dissatisfaction and restlessness manifested by our laborers, we think the matter is one of great importance; and we feel sure our people will not allow any opportunity to pass unimproved that will tend to better their condition and render them more prosperous:

In accordance with resolutions adopted, November 3, 1886, by the Farmers' and Planters' Club of East and West Baton Rouge, requesting the Bureau of Agriculture to call a convention of planters and farmers to assemble in Baton Rouge. La.: for the purpose of organizing a State agricultural society, and the said club at a subsequent meeting having suggested the last Wednesday in January, 1887, as a suitable time for holding such a convention: therefore, I, as Governor of Louisiana ex-officio President of Bureau of Agriculture, do hereby request the planters and farmers of Louisiana to meet in the city of Baton Rouge, in the Agricultural hall of the State University and A. & M. College, at noon, on the said day, January 26, 1887. for the purpose of organizing a State agricultural society.
All agricultural organizations: granges, clubs, fairs, societies, sugar planters' associations and branch associations are requested to send delegates, properly accredited to said convention. In the parish where no agricultural organizations exist the police jury are requested to accredit delegates to such convention. An earnest wish is expressed that all citizens of Louisiana will interest themselves in forwarding the success of this convention and see that every parish and every agricultural interest of Louisiana is represented at said convention.

In connection with the above, the following programme for the proposed convention is announced:

The above movement meets with the hearty approval and will receive the earnest co-operation of this Department. The following programme has been selected by the East and West Baton Rouge Club, and distinguished speakers have been invited to address the convention upon the subjects given. The railroads will be requested to give reduced fare, and the hotels reduced rates. and the citizens of Baton Rouge. with their usual liberality, will open their homes to the delegates. Every effort will be made by the members of the Farmers Club to insure the success of the convention, and it is earnestly desired that every parish and every agricultural interest be fully represented. The following is the programme adopted:
State Agricultural Society, temporary organization, address of welcome and response. Permanent organization and appointment of committees. Addresses and discussions upon agricultural organization. Economy necessary to the successful cultivation of cotton in Louisiana. Future of sugar culture in Louisiana Rice culture. Grasses adapted to Louisiana. Stock raising. Fruit culture and truck gardening. Labor. Economy in fertilization. Agricultural education. Night meetings will be devoted to the discussion of such subjects as may be suggested by any delegate.
