From the Columbian Centinel.

OCCASIONAL ODE,
For February 22, 1800.

His day in happy union met,
We mourn "Columbia's fav'rite son,
He's gone, but can we e'er forget
The worthy, virtuous WASHINGTON.
No more his full commanding form
Appears, to hold a world in awe ;
To circumscribe the embattled storm,
Or circumduct the bolts of war.
He lives no more to wake the soul,
By merit, eloquence, or art ;
The wise by wisdom to control,
Or yield pure pleasure to the heart.
No more o'er life's divergent grades,
He holds supreme, unrivall'd sway ;
He sleeps in undistinguish'd shades,
But sleeps, to wake in endless day.
Adieu, departed Shade! be blest,
While Nations celebrate thy fame,
Here in Columbia's grateful breast,
True honor shall enshrine thy name.
Let every patriot's bosom feel:
Let sympathetic love be one !
And let the votive, vocal peal,
Immortalize GEORGE WASHINGTON!
