The Servicemen's Educational and Welfare League of Local 191, Bridgeport Teamsters, has since its inception raised a total of $862, states the Servicemen's News, a newspaper published by the League that made its first monthly appearance this week.
"This publication has a two-fold purpose--to promote the welfare of our union members, driver-salesmen, who serve the public, and to be a medium of contact with our members in the armed forces," announces the leading article in the paper.
There are about 150 members of Local 191 in the services. A short editorial states.
"This paper fulfills a dream of 'Tom' Murphy's . . . we must always do the best we can, always being guided by the ideals and high principles in which he believed."
John P. Kiely, president of the Local, and chairman of the Servicemen's League, wrote a fine tribute to Murphy, the founder of the Local and its secretary-treasurer and business agent at the time of his death April 28.
The Connecticut Labor Movement is better for 'Tom' Murphy's having been in it. If all labor leaders were like him, honest, straightforward, long-viewed, God-fearing, all the forces of reaction could not prevail against labor wrote Kiely.
