Full Text

Education in New Haven.—The Marshal of this district, in his account of the census recently taken, reported eighty five white persons of the age of 20 years and upwards, inhabitants of this town, who can neither read and write. This was an unpleasant fact to publish to the world, especially as our city had become somewhat famous for its advantages in the way of education. But on inquiry we find that the honor of the place is, after all, not greatly involved by this discovery, inasmuch as not one of these eighty five is town born. Eighty four are foreigners, who have probably not lived among us long enough to imbibe our literary propensities. The other person was born in a town in this State, but has lived here only a short time. He will not fall in the class of illiterati, when the next census is taken.
