GOVERNOR LANGER SPEAKS
Lynn Stambaugh, Fargo, Will Get Endorsement for National Commander

Minot, N. D., June 22.—(R) Gov. William Langer praised Legionnaires for the "fine programs" in the interest of the state and commended them for their "spirit of fair play" in an address before the North Dakota State Legion convention Tuesday.

"The Legion believes in fair play and will stay with a fellow until it believes beyond a reasonable doubt it must part with him," the governor declared.

Introduced by Jack Williams of Fargo, the chief executive spoke briefly following Henry H. Dudley, Lincoln, Neb., field secretary of the Legion national field service, explained the rehabilitation program carried out nationally.

It seemed certain as delegates convened for the final session that Harry Edblom of Oakes would be elected state commander and Williams would be renamed as adjutant.

Bismarck Woman Favored

Mrs. Harry Rosenthal of Bismarck was assured the state presidency of the Legion auxiliary when that organization convened with no opposition in sight.

Governor Langer was greeted with "hail to the chief" by the North Dakota Legion band. He did not comment directly upon his action in demanding the 1937 law changing this method of selecting veterans service commissioner.

Under the law authority for appointment of the state veterans service commissioner is shifted from the shoulders of the legion alone to four veterans organizations and the state adjutant general.

Since the new bill passed, T. O. Kraabel, present commissioner, resigned to do national rehabilitation work for the legion.

Praises Fine Things

The governor praised the "fine things the legion is doing," its direct action to build dams in the state, and its work with youth.

"For personal reasons I am sorry Mr. Kraabel is not going to continue in charge of the veterans service of this state, in which he has done fine work, but I hope he will be happy in his new work" the governor said.

Declaring today was approximately the third anniversary of his conviction on federal court charges of misapplying relief monies, subsequently dismissed, Langer declared he was pleased with the fine reception he received from the legion shortly afterward.

"It was the legion which stayed with the governor when things looked very black and it will be a pleasure to work hand in hand with the legion in the future," he stated.

Boost Mrs. Morris

In the auxiliary meeting, principal action taken was the indorsement of Mrs. James Morris, Bismarck, for president of national American Legion auxiliary; she is placed in the field for election in 1938. She has been national poppy chairman and is now national rehabilitation chairman.

Among the resolutions considered by the committee were these major items, with definite action yet to be taken:

To Endorse Stambaugh

Endorsement of Lynn Stambaugh, Fargo, for national commander to be selected at the next national Legion convention in New York.

Support for enactment of a legal civil service law in state offices.
