UNITED EFFORTS OF THOSE OPPRESSED
By J. A. (Jack) Johnson
The report of President Truman's Committee on Civil Rights should be an inspiration to every person in the United States who is a member of a minority group.
The report, the finest expression of Democratic ideals since the Declaration of Independence, covers every phase of discrimination and segregation, and speaks out against the evils of working class situations and the domination by the majority of the social life of minority groups.
Negroes, the largest minority group in the country, and the group most oppressed should not remain idle and merely hope for things to come to pass. Nothing will be gained for us except through united will and effort on our own part. If we want more favorable laws, we must organize and by exercising our right of suffrage demand the enactment of legislation which will eventually bring to pass the Utopia of which we dream.
The Civil Liberties League I. B. P. O. E. of W. of Seattle offers the medium through which we may all work together to the good of ourselves and our posterity. It is a member of a nationwide organization dedicated to the reforms the president's Committee recommended. Everyone is eligible to membership in the Civil Liberties League who believes in honest, decent, efficient government.
A permanent headquarters for the League will be opened in the near future at 662 1/2 Jackson St. where a cordial welcome and the opportunity to render constructive service for your community awaits you.
J. A. (Jack) Johnson is President of the League and Mrs. Anita Holliday, is Secretary.
