Full Text

While no blame can be attached to Addicks Republicans for the purposes of organization, this action need not prevent their continued hostility to the States Senate. It was necessary, as well as advisable, that the Legislature be organized, the Republicans being in the majority in each house, a Republican organization was also advisable. But the Regular Republicans who consented to the organization compromise, in no manner involve themselves in any sort of agreement, express or implied, to go into caucus knowing, as they must, that such caucus would be controlled by the friends of Mr. Addicks.

With respect to the Senatorships, the duty of the Regular Republican members is plain. They should hold their own caucus and nominate two good Regular Republicans. And they should go into the regular and joint sessions of the Legislature, and vote solidly for these two men, from first to last.

If the Democratic members of the Legislature do their duty, the Senatorial contest need not be protracted. They should cast their solid vote for the two candidates named by the Regular Republicans. If they do this, Mr. Addicks will surely be beaten. More than that, he will find the Senatorships filled, with no inducement for him to make another effort to secure the coveted prize for the next four years. Leave the Senatorships open through a deadlock, and he will be right into the fight again at the next election.

The people could have effectually disposed of Mr. Addicks' chances by choosing a Democratic Legislature at the last election. But, while they did not do this, neither did they elect an Addicks Legislature. Counting the Democratic and Regular Republican votes, and the Legislature is anti-Addicks, by a large majority.

An anti-Addicks Legislature should elect two anti-Addicks Senators, and it will do so if all the anti-Addicks votes combine upon the same candidates.
