NEED OF CIVIC PRIDE.
To the Editor:
I would like to ask whether or not
the city has charge of side walks in all
parts of the city. I'm of the opinion
that if it has. then some parts of Salem
is sadly neglected in this respect. In
north Salem, I speak of the Highland
district, especially, some of the side
walks are almost impossible. The boards
are either worn out and gone entirely
or they are loose. Children passing over
these to and from school are in danger
of bad falls and not only children but
grown people as well, as only a few
days ago I saw a man fall as a result
of stepping on a board that was loose
at one end. Not only this, but in many
places the wild rose bushes have grown
over the walks so as to make it very
disagreeable in passing as well as being
unsightly
It seems to me property owners would
cut these bushes out, as has been done
in some places, and adding to the ap
pearance of the streets in general. Along
Columbia avenue for a distance of sev-
eral blocks these bushes over-grow the
side walks and while we talk of beauti-
fying Salem proper and as this is a
direct road to the Pacific highway.
where countless persons pass daily, it
would make a vast difference if these
things were improved.
PEARL COOPER.

Main Argument

the city should take charge of and repair sidewalks in north salem, particularly the highland district, where they are dangerous due to worn or loose boards and overgrown wild rose bushes, posing risks to children and adults and detracting from the city's appearance, especially along columbia avenue leading to the pacific highway.
