Suicide and extraordinary development.

We learn from Rutland, Vt. that the Hon. Robert Temple, President of the Bank at that place, and one of the most distinguished citizens of that State, committed suicide on Monday last, by shooting himself with a gun. It was at first thought that his death was accidental, and the jury of inquest returned a verdict to that effect; but it has since been ascertained that he was on the point of being arrested by the district Attorney for frauds upon the government in his capacity of Pension Agent, and there can be no doubt but he committed suicide in order to avoid the shame and disgrace of detection! It is stated that these frauds date as far back as 1822, and have been followed up ever since, and that consequently the amount thus fraudulently obtained must be very great.

We are not certain whether actual forgeries are charged to him, but we believe such is the fact. He has been in the business for a great number of years, and has been faithful to the pensioners so far as their interest is concerned, and we believe not the slightest suspicion was ever entertained by his fellow citizens of his integrity: He has left a highly accomplished family to mourn his untimely exit; and the sensation created in the section of the country where he resided is unparalleled.—Boston Whig.
