Joseph Clay (Whig) has been elected to the
Senate of the United States, by the Legislature of New
Hampshire, to serve until the 4th of March next, and
will, of course, supersede Mr. Jenness, the appointee
of the Executive. He is the brother of the Mr. Clay
who was killed in a duel with Mr. Graves. He was
a Captain in the regular army, during the last war, was
distinguished for his bravery, and lost an eye in one of the
battles of the Northern frontier. He is a Tariff man
and his vote will count double.
