Women In Police Work
Now that our Southern cities have about decided to
open the door of employment to Negro policemen, it is not
too early for competent Negro women to begin thinking of
employment as Policewomen.
The primary function of policewomen is to deal with
cases in which women and children are involved, either as
offenders or victims of offenses. Crimes by or against fe-
males, irrespective of age, and boys up to the age of 12,
should be the special responsibility of the policewoman. Her
work, therefore, is for the most part, remedial and pre-
ventive.
Such a field, it seems to us, with its great number of
opportunities to change the course of women and children
and to return them to the path of rectitude, offers a splen-
did challenge to the right woman.
Today, figures show that there are over 1,000 police-
women in the nation, and these are regarded as a whole-
some influence among children and women.
