DOWNING A COLORED BRUTE.
Major Chanler's Commendable Method of Protecting a Girl from Insolent Conduct.
One day not long ago Representative William Astor Chanler was riding in an open car on Broadway in New York, says an exchange of that city. In front of him sat a young pretty girl. Into the seat with stepped a burly negro, who soon began to annoy her with his rudeness. Chanler carried a light cane. With the cane he touched the negro on the shoulder.
"Don't do that," he remarked, in a quiet but firm tone, and the negro glared angrily at him. A moment later the annoying attentions were resumed. Once again Chanler touched the negro with his cane.
"Don't do that," he remarked. "I really do not like it."
"And who the devil are you?" said the colored man, angrily.
Chanler laid his cane on the chair. Then he arose, seized the negro by the shoulder, threw him bodily into the street while the car was running at full speed, settled back again in his seat and lighted a cigarette and smiled.
