Extract of a letter from Stratford, dated Monday morning, July 5, 1779.
The enemy have landed 2000 men on the west side of New Haven.
An express this moment arrived to Col. Whiting, with an account that our people were collected at the meeting-house, and there expected to engage.
Twelve o'clock. Another express is arrived; a part of the enemy (600) have been repulsed at the bridge, one mile and a half from New Haven. Their main body, it is said, consists of 3000. Forty sail now anchored off New Haven harbour.
One o'clock. An express again says the enemy had been repulsed three times by the Milford militia, who were assembled at a bridge which the enemy meant to pass; that they were compelled to turn, and went with their whole force round to the town by the powder mills. The militia are gathering from all parts, and determined to oppose them.
Six o'clock. We have intelligence of the enemy being in the town of New Haven; they entered it at one o'clock; our people still gathering, and firmly hope to dispossess them this night.
Tuesday morning, eight o'clock. Nothing has yet been done; the enemy remain in possession of New Haven; great numbers of our people have collected.
