On Wednesday last arrived here the Privateer Queen of Hungary, belonging to Boston, commanded by Capt. Gruchy, with a large French Prize Ship, which he took in Concert with Capt. Potter of Rhode-Island, the 14th April last, in Lat. 33. There were two Ships in Company, but in the Beginning of the Engagement Capt. Potter lost the Head of his Mainmast; which obliged him to bear away to refit; in the mean Time Capt. Gruchy engaged them both for three Glasses, when one of the Ships told his Consort, that he had received a Shot in his Stern, that had raked him fore and aft, and damaged him so much that he would make the best of his Way off. Capt. Gruchy then engaged the other very smartly, and the last Glass Yard-arm and Yard-arm, before she would strike. She is a Letter of Marque Ship of 320 Tons, called the Valliant, with 12 Guns, and 50 Men, completely fitted with Warlike Stores, and laden with 320 Hogsheads of Sugar, and 35,000 Weight of Indigo, and was bound from St. Domingo for Bourdeaux. Just after he struck, Capt. Potter having refitted, gave Chase to the other Ship, who was still in Sight, and at Dark came up with and engaged her; but we hear since, that he lost her in the Night, in a Squall. Capt. Gruchy had two Men killed, one lost his Thigh, one his Arm, and several wounded. Capt. Gruchy had but 49 Men, and but 8 of his Carriage Guns upon Deck, and in all Probability they had taken both, if Capt. Potter's Mast had not broke; for this was the largest. The French lost three Men, and sundry wounded.
The above Privateers are those who lay Claim to part of the Prize lately taken by Capt. Richards and Capt. Jeffery; and we have certain Advice from St. Kitts, that a few Hours after Capt. Jeffery had sailed with the Prize for this Port, Commodore Knowles at the Request of Capt. Potter, Sent Capt. Somere, in a 20 Gun Ship out after them, who carried them to Antigua. By the same Intelligence we are assured, that Capt. Jeffery will soon have his Prize released, and may be expected here in a short Time, notwithstanding those Gentlemen chose to have their Pretensions decided at such a Distance from their Owners, and at a Time and Place of such imminent Danger, as St. Kitts did then and still does appear to be.
