NEW BRIDGE AT ENCANTO PARK

The old, narrow roadway leading to Picnic Island in Encanto Park soon will be augmented by a steel supported two-way bridge.

The new five-ton corrugated steel structure, which cost $3,500, will be covered with dirt and black top. A wooden guard rail will be temporarily installed until a permanent rail is built late in the fall. The old bridge has been in service for the past 18 years and has become a bottleneck for greatly increased pedestrian and vehicular traffic. For the first time in two years, it will be possible for boats to circle Picnic Island.

In the event pedestrian traffic at the bandshell becomes extra heavy, the old road will be closed to vehicles and will be used to carry pedestrians only.
