BOARD OF EDUCATION.

REGULAR MEETING LAST EVENING.

The regular semi-monthly meeting of the
Board of Education was held last evening, Pres-
ident Grimshaw in the chair.

The committee appointed to investigate the
duties of the principals of Nos. 2, 6, 7 and
14, reported that they were required to teach
four hours per day, which did not leave them
sufficient time for the performance of other
duties devolving upon them; they therefore
moved that these principals be required to teach
only three hours per day. Adopted.

The committee to secure a room in the south
western portion of the city, for school purposes,
reported that the only place that can be secured
without great expense, is the second story of the
Weccacoe Hose House, at $12 per month.
The subject was recommitted to the com-
mittee, for further investigation.

The Committee on Accounts reported the
Treasurer's report correct.

Committee on new school No. 14 reported
that the building was rapidly progressing to-
wards completion.

The committee also asked to be authorized to
ask for proposals for putting heaters in the school
and protecting it with lightning rods. Request
granted.

The Committee on Teachers recommended
the following transfers which were adopted by
the Board :

Miss Susan M. Bateman, to school No. 1, at
a salary of $425; Miss Maggie A. Davis, First
Assistant of school No. 10, at a salary of $360;
Miss Laura McLeod, Second Assistant, No. 10,
at a salary of $330; Miss Annie E. Magarity,
Fourth Assistant, No. 10, at a salary of $300;
Miss Anna H. Fullerton, an additional teacher
in school No. 14, at a salary of $300.

Col. Moore's resolution, providing the grades
of studies in the schools remain unchanged the
present school year, was taken up and passed.

The Superintendent's report was read and
ordered to be filed.

The Visiting Committee of No. 6 asked leave
to have new desks placed in the school. Post-
poned.

Mr. Febiger offered an addition to the By-
Laws, to the effect that all monies belonging to
the Board shall be placed in some Banking In-
stitution, by the Treasurer, as directed by the
Finance Committee, and be drawn out only by
an order of the President and Secretary, coun-
tersigned by the Treasurer; in case of the ab-
sence or temporary disability of these officers, by
such persons as the Board shall direct.
The rules were suspended and the By-Law
adopted. It is to go into effect Nov. 1st.

Mr. Hilles presented a communication from
an old lady, referring to the great number of
children who do not attend school, in opposition
to the wishes of their parents, and suggested the
appointment of an officer, to look after these
delinquent scholars, and see that they attend.
Referred to a committee of three—Messrs.
Hilles, Wales and Culbert.
