Full Text
Senor Castelar of Spain has a fine conception of what is in the line of the eternal fitness of things so far as the Latin race is concerned. It is a fine spectacle for the rival races to behold France and Italy gnawing at each other's vitals in a regular Kilkenny cat fight programme. So it was so many centuries ago, when the races of southern Europe, divided into warring empires of the East and West, had weakened the resources of both empires. The barbarian came down like the wolf on the fold, and savage Goth and furious Hun charged upon the walls of Rome, and laid waste the plains of Italy. One would suppose that the past might serve as a light to guide the feet of these people in the present. The interests of the Latin race lie in the line of alliances among themselves, not in those made with rival races. Don Castelar is a statesman.
