SHIP SOVEREIGN.
The steamboat Hercules arrived last night from this vessel, with some of the passengers who came up in her. She brings up all the specie that was on board of her amounting it is said to 250,000 dollars, except two boxes of doubloons, which it is supposed were stolen from the circumstance of part of a box having been found on deck and a number of doubloons in the possession of the sailors; one had twenty-two concealed on his person, which were of course taken from him. The letter bags were also brought up by the Hercules, with the exception of one which had by some means got open, and the letters of which were seen floating about—as many were secured as possible; they are completely soaked through. The ship is in the most dangerous situation, and should a gale of wind come on will no doubt go to pieces. The steamboat American Eagle has been taken from her about 100 bales and cases of merchandise, and one lighter was loading from her by boats through the surf, it being impossible to lay alongside. Two others were waiting ready to load.
The name of the gentleman who was unfortunately drowned in attempting to reach the shore, was LaBat. It appears, and we are eager to correct our first information, that neither rashness nor precipitation induced him to make the attempt, but soon as the vessel struck, seeing the imminent danger of the passengers, he gallantly undertook to swim ashore with a rope, by which they too might hope to reach the land. He sunk in the breakers to rise no more.
Capt. Griswold, with his mates, is still on board the wreck, endeavoring to save what they can, notwithstanding the former has both his feet severely frost bitten. We learn that for four days before the accident, he had not been able to take an observation, owing to the haziness of the weather; and that when it occurred, the lead had been kept going every five or ten minutes for some time previous. The passengers speak of his conduct in terms of the highest praise.
We regret to be again compelled to refer to the dastardly acts of the people along shore—acts which are really a disgrace to humanity. When the passengers had at last landed on the beach, their trunks were broken open before their faces and rifled of their contents. One of the passengers, a lady, states that besides all her baggage, she was robbed by them of a gold watch, chain, and all her money. Other parties of these harpies were lying off the wreck in their boats, ready to seize their prey as soon as by the destruction of the vessel it should come within their grasp.
We have not been able to learn any particulars of the cargo, except that there were 200 pipes brandy on board, to Mr H. Patton.
The following are the names of the cabin passengers: Capt. Sharp, lady and son; Dr. Stearns; Mr. Shurley, lady and servant, and Mr. Lebat who was unfortunately drowned. There were fourteen passengers besides in the steerage.
