On Thursday the 14th instant, the Senate of this state resumed the consideration of the bill pending before them for granting to Congress the power to levy and collect an impost of five per cent. and on a division the bill was rejected by twelve votes against eight. It is hoped that this determination will induce the several States in the Union to set themselves seriously about the business of establishing state funds sufficiently productive to pay their respective quotas of the federal requisitions, which may consolidate the credit of the United States on a firm and constitutional basis.
